Yep, things are changing

Facebook has had a tremendous affect on society.
  • Most people now talk online more than they talk to people in real life.
  • More and more people are getting their news and information from Facebook.
Facebook (and social media) are playing a role in revolutions, in politics, in the ability to solicit fast and quick reactions and responses from a large number of people.

This ability to garner such a large force of individuals and direct their attention and outrage (or support) in just a matter of minutes is a force to be reckoned with.  It will not be tamed.  The genie is out of the bottle.

This power will continue to play a major part in our lives and continue to shape who we as a society are becoming.

I don't do much on Facebook, but last month a high school friend of mine who lives halfway across the country got very sick. Her son "highjacked" her account to send out status updates to all her friends. She passed away last week, and he was able to let everyone know. Between email and Facebook, I was able to quickly contact the entire group of people who used to hang out together, including one who now lives in Africa. Amazing!
